The final foil Olympic qualification event by ranking takes place this weekend in Doha, Qatar.  Fencer in the men’s and women’s division will compete for the final individual places at the Aspire Dome.

WOMEN’S FOIL PREVIEW

Going into the event Russia, Italy, France and Hungary had already secured their team berths with France and Italy securing top 4 places as Hungary claimed the European spot.

In the individual race, Germany’s Leonie Ebert can only be caught by teammate Anne Sauer if Sauer wins in Qatar.  Maria Diaz of Spain holds a lead for the second spot but could be tied on points by Poland’s Julia Walczyk and Nicole Pustilnik of Israel.  That would only be the case if both Walczyk and Pustilnik make the round of 32 and if Diaz doesn’t score in Doha.  If they are tied then the countback would be used to decide who goes to Tokyo.

MEN’S FOIL PREVIEW

France, Italy and Russia enter the tournament in Doha with their team places confirmed as top four teams.  Germany have also qualified as the top European team outside the top four.

Great Britain’s Marcus Mepstead leads the race for the two European places which he would secure with a top 16 finish.  Spain’s Carlos Llavador, who won the last event in Cairo, has a big advantage of Alexander Choupenitch of the Czech Republic and Poland’s Michal Seiss but can still be caught.

There’s still a lot to play for in both events, with live coverage beginning at 7am on the FIE’s YouTube channel.

European countries who have not qualified any athletes by the team or individual rankings, will be able to send up to one male and one female sabre fencer to the European Olympic qualifier, due to take place in Madrid 24-25 April – the final Olympic qualification event for Europeans.
